TXDOT Worker Dies Picking Up Trash Near Highway

Timothy Denerrio, a 50-year old resident of Austin, was killed Thursday, November 17th, 2011 while picking up trash around noontime near IH-35.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Denerrio was working on a crew that was hired by the Texas Department of Transportation to collect various articles of trash near the I-35 highway in Round Rock. According to the TXDOT spokesman, Denerrio was working along the highway with four others as they were facing towards oncoming traffic and wearing bright orange safety vests. Additionally, there were warning signs nearby notifying drivers of the roadside cleanup.

However, as Denerrio was bending over, a pickup truck struck him and continued down the road "some distance" before stopping to render aid.

Denerrio was working with TXDOT through an Easter Seals Central Texas program that advocates for job opportunities for the disabled.
